Ponduru Cotton Handloom

Ponduru cotton comes from a small cluster of villages in Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh, where cotton is still hand-spun on a takli (a traditional hand spindle) rather than machine-spun — the same hand-spinning tradition Mahatma Gandhi is associated with promoting during the freedom movement. The resulting yarn is finer and softer than machine-spun cotton, and the handloom weaving that follows produces a saree with a distinctive light, slightly uneven texture that gets softer with every wash. This is one of the rarer weaving traditions we carry, since the number of artisans still hand-spinning Ponduru cotton has shrunk considerably over the decades, making each saree in this category a genuine piece of a living but endangered craft. Rooi Rang’s Ponduru collection comes in solid colours and simple colour-blocked designs that let the fabric’s texture speak for itself rather than competing with heavy prints or embellishment. These sarees suit anyone who wants an authentically handmade cotton saree with a story behind it, whether for daily wear or as a considered addition to a handloom wardrobe. As with the rest of our range, expect handwoven construction, natural cotton fibre, and the same shipping and returns terms that apply site-wide.
